What is the flame retardant rating of optical cables?


When choosing fiber optic jumpers for comprehensive cabling, in addition to considering performance, fire prevention and environmental protection should also be taken into account to improve the safety index inside the building. Fiber optic sheath is the external protective layer of the optical cable. It protects optical fibers from wear, moisture, chemicals, and other external factors that may damage their integrity and performance, ensuring the lifespan, performance, and reliability of optical cables in various applications.
On fiber optic jumpers, letters such as PVC, LSZH, OFNR, OFNP, etc. are usually printed. So what do they represent? What scenario is it suitable for?
As early as the mid-1980s, halogen containing flame retardant polymer systems were widely used in the cable industry due to their outstanding flame retardant effects, among which PVC is a good example. However, PVC has a disadvantage of releasing a large amount of smoke during combustion, and producing serious corrosive and toxic gases. So, the emergence of LSZH has effectively solved this problem. LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) material has some obvious advantages such as low smoke, low toxicity, low corrosion, and high flame retardancy.
With the development of the industry and the continuous improvement of quality standards, OFNP and OFNR are gradually being widely used. OFNP and OFNR are two types of optical cables used in buildings. OFNP has fire-resistant and low smoke characteristics. This is the highest fire rating and there is no other type of cable that can replace it. However, the fiber resistance and low smoke properties of OFNR are not as good as OFNP.
So:
(1) For ventilated areas, please choose a ventilation grade sheath labeled "OFNP" or "OFCP". These protective covers are designed to limit the spread of smoke and flames in air handling spaces.
(2) In the riser area, use riser grade sheaths labeled "OFNR" or "OFCR". These sheaths are used to prevent flames from spreading between floors through the riser space.
